E "balestrieri montati"???
[SM=g27819]

Achibuseri montati:
Consequence of "balestrieri montati", to oppose the growing efficacy of heavy infantry as "picchieri", the light cavalry, left the heavy armours, the lances, the gallop charges, kitted itself with "archibugi" and used caracole technique where light cavalry advanced at trot till 25-30 meters from infantry then shooted their weapons while rapidly freeing themselves to reload while the second line advanced and did the same, subjecting this way enemies to a continuos fire causing a massacre. Similar pounding was used also against heavy cavalry trying to separate some unities from the main array. When isolated these heavy cavalry groups were highly vulnerable to the quicker and nimbler light cavalry which, shooting from the distance, caused big losses.

Sergenti montati:
The light cavalry portion constituted, with "armigero" and "paggio", the so called "Italian lance", was usually aggregated, during battles, to the more effective light cavalries like "stradioti". Fundamentally was considered cannon fodder used as shield for heavy cavalry and to chase rooted enemy.
Was hardly used against organized infantry and heavier cavalry
.

Mounted Crossbowmen

Balestrieri montati:
Horse crossbowmen, equipped with smaller crossbowes then infantry, were an attempt of western countries of reproducing the oriental horse shooters efficacy.
Even if they had some efficacy, crossbowes had a low shooting frequency which obliged these men to keep themselves clear from problems using their own mobility.
Italian mounted crossbowmen were possibly the most efficient among western armies.

During the XV century Italian countries was in the the need to create a standing heavy cavalry corp.
Mainly recruited among mercenary troops deserters or loose companies veterans, they received a life assignment from the country they served.
Experienced soldiers, hardened by dozens of battles they represented a certainty for any general who could trust on their military ability.
Their equipment was complete and comparable with the best western heavy cavalries ones. Fully armoured, also on the horses, were almost invulnerable to shooting weapons. Their collision with enemy troops, if used properly, could solve any battle.

Cavalleria Leggeria

During XV Century armours for horse and rider got lighter and lighter to increase their mobility, often homini d’arme (traduco o no?) rode horses which were deprived of any protection and wore an armour which covered them just to the knees leaving the legs protection to some high rider boots: these divisions, called “cavallaria liziera” or “cavallezeri”, still used heavy cavalry technique like charges with lance and fight with swords and clubs

Experienced soldiers, hardened by dozens of battles they represented a certainty for any general who could trust on their military ability.
The increasing costs for the Home d’arme equipment caused the separation among heavy cavalries, fully equipped and called “Elmetti”, and the less prestigious and partially equipped one called “Utili”. These ones even if more vulnerable were still considered shock troops.

Italian Homini d’arme, unlike what happened in other western countries, were not necessarily from noble families. True professional soldiers they draw up a contract where they offer their military ability in change of money. Armaments in “Italy” were so abundant and of high quality that was easy for these cavalries to get fine equipment. Their military ability was among the best but their devotion was not as their motivations were only money related and not prestigious like other noble cavalries.
If well assisted by infantries they could face any heavy cavalry and their help was decisive on the battlefield.
Homini d’arme were arranged in “lanze”, an operative unit, smaller then European equivalent, which was constituted by a sergent, a “paggio” and by the homo d’arme himself.

The lance is always been the infantry basis weapon; cheap and effective it gives a good protection against cavalries and keep enemy infantries at distance. Despite of this it shouldn’t be right to keep the lancers on the battle front for a long time.
First military forces permanently in service in Italy were those assigned to garrison duty or city protection. Those garrisons were constituted by infantries called “provisionati” as they received a “provisione” (commission); a regular salary from the public authority. The trend of XV Century was the continuous increasing of this kind of soldiers that were considered a permanent infantry force, ordered by state officials, managed and paied without using the “condotta” system. Milano, during the third decade of XV, had 1.000 “provisionati” and, few time afterwards, we can find traces of “provisionati” of San Marco, in service for Venice.
In the beginning they were considered just mercenaries but in Milano and Venice, for first, they began to be considered a permanent force, selected, prepared, managed and paied by the “government.

Crossbow origins are very old but church and nobles were hostile to its usage mainly because this weapon was so powerful and easy to use, even by not skilled soldiers, they were scared it could reduce the heavy cavalry influence on the battlefield.
In spite it was a perfect weapon for the sieges, when it could be easier to reload and aim from a covered position, it was largely used also on the battlefield.
Italian Communes had great traditions with this weapon; crossbowmen from Genova, above all, were requested by all European armies: better equipped then standard infantry, they were considered special forces with specialized tasks to achieve.
In open battlefields the crossbow became rapidly outdate by the invention of english Long-Bow which had a faster fire ratio and had a trajectory that allowed to step over the big traditional shields, used by crossbowmen, called “pavesi” (from the city Pavia).

Provisionati Arceri
Arzieri provisionati

Despite of the italian yew wood, considered the best wood for the english longbows, the bow didn’t impose itself due the fact it was considered a rural use weapon, inferior than crossbow.
Anyway as it was used for hunting and siege battles it was still possible to find, in the Italian states, some good archers equipped with both wood and composite bows.

Provisionati Picchieri
In the last quarter of the XV Century Swissmen made a revolution in the military field reproposing an ancient concept: the phalanx, which was a massive square made of foot soldiers, more than 20 lines deep who used a “wall” made of 18 feet long pikes. A both defensive and offensive formation which was impossible to be attacked frontally by the cavalry and extremely effective against not united infantries.
The first 4 or 5 lines were able to attack simultaneously with the longs pikes gripped and pushed forward by even 10 soldiers.
The rest of the square applied pressure and was ready to take place of the fallen of the first lines.
The overwhelming victories of these troops convinced many European countries to introduce this kind of technique, but as it needs great cohesion and skill to be really effective, there were a lot of failed tries and very few successful ones.
“I provisionati” anyway were not standard troops but veterans of sure valour, selected with care and enlisted from the best areas like Romagna or among the stranger troops so they eventually would hold well the battle front.
First military forces permanently in service in Italy were those assigned to garrison duty or city protection. Those garrisons were constituted by infantries called “provisionati” as they received a “provisione” (commission); a regular salary from the public authority. Provisionati Rotularii

Rotulari Provvisionati
To win against battlefield fortifications and effectively oppose the pikemen square was created a particular kind of infantry armed with “rotella” and sword.
One of the first troops leader who used this particular infantry was Braccio Fortebraccio da Montone. This infantry was lightly armed, very mobile and trained to be really aggressive taking advantage of Italian fencing tradition. Largely used in Spain against Moors was introduced in Italy by Aragonese dynasty of Naples in the first part of the XV Century.

Provisionati Arbalesters
Crossbow disappeared from battlefield in the first half of XVI century definitively supplanted by fire weapons. Anyway in the last phase the crossbow reached an excellent technology level: provided with steel (SICURI CHE FOSSE ACCIAIO???) bow, that needed special hoist or jack to be reloaded, crossbow reached extraordinary power, precision and range. The big and acuminated “VERRETTONI”, applied to “quadrelli” were able to pierce even the best armours. The low fire ratio was the real problem with this weapon but skilled crossbowmen, if well protected, were still able to create enormous damages even on the best enemy troops.

Crossbow was an easy weapon to be used, even for unskilled troops like the Ordinance ones. A smart general, anyway, always avoids to use crossbowmen in the first line of the battle where enemy could put them in rout easily. Besides professional soldiers countries, while creating an army on territorial basis like “provisionati”, never abolished the ancient use of the general call for all the capable men. This way they still have the chance to manage a great variety of soldiers very useful for cities defence, fortification building and wrecker tasks. Surely less important for real war, easy to desert and badly behaved, “militia” was still useful to defend cities and territories with low costs. These “militiae”, called in the XV century “Ordinanze”, during the XVI century changed its name into “Cernide” from the Latin “cernere” that means “choosed / selected”. Every municipality had to supply a certain number, called “carata”, of these soldiers. Selected for age and qualification, they were separated accordingly with their military equipment. They weren’t asked to give effective and long military service but to train themselves in the non working days and to be prepared, obviously, in case of war.

Ordinanze Picchieri

Ordinanze pikesmen were not aggressive and ferocious enough to be used in these kind of battle, for this reason skilled and smart generals should always use them carefully adding some more efficient troops to support them.Besides professional soldiers countries, while creating an army on territorial basis like “provisionati”, never abolished the ancient use of the general call for all the capable men. This way they still have the chance to manage a great variety of soldiers very useful for cities defence, fortification building and wrecker tasks. Surely less important for real war, easy to desert and badly behaved, “militia” was still useful to defend cities and territories with low costs. Ordinanze arquebusiers

The most important military revolution of the Renaissance was the introduction and the use, by light artillery, of portable fire weapons. Their lethal effect was mainly caused by the leaden material, the projectiles were made of, that was not covered in a steel capsule and so got incandescent due the high velocity, and added to the perforating effect the laceration of the bodies due the very hot mass. (H)arquebus was invented about the year 1460 and is different from the previous weapon (handgun) for the wooden butt and the serpentine fire system (an “S” where the fuse was settled). From the 1517 it was changed with the wheel gun-lock.
Fire weapons lived together many years with bows and crossbows, this happened mainly because the first portable fire weapons were not enough reliable. A skilled and well trained archer was able to shoot, with good accuracy, 10 arrows in a minute in a 200 mt radius while several minutes were necessary to reload an (H)arquebus of early ‘500, which has a good accuracy in a 50 mt radius and was totally inefficient over 100 mt. The great diffusion of fire weapons was due the fact it was a very easy weapon to be used while several years of training were needed to train a skilled archer.
(H)arquebus was an easy weapon to be used, even for unskilled troops like the Ordinance ones. A smart general, anyway, always avoids to use these troops in the first line of the battle where enemy could put them in rout easily.

Italian light infantry
Most of italian battles of XV century were long sieges that needed cheap and aggressive infantries.
These conflicts, with the ferocious boardings of the Mediterranean sea, contributed to create an hardened infantry kind called “fantaria liziera” or “assault infantry”.
While used in open battlefield they were a fast and versatile unity greatly skilled for attack and enemy surrounding. Lightly protected by a padded jacket and shield they were equipped with short lances, billhooks and “corsesche”, they were unfit for frontal heavy cavalry charges but when the rush is lowered they could be lethal charging from the sides with their weapons suited for unsaddling horsemen and for cutting the horses hocks.
